As the CEO of San Diego Markets, Catt Fields White develops and manages
markets and events in urban neighborhoods to bring farmers to the city
and people to the table. She founded and curates the year-round Little Italy
Mercato, which attracts 20,000 visitors every Saturday.
How many farmers markets are there in
San Diego? There are more than 50 weekly
farmers markets in San Diego County,
some with just a handful of farmers and
others that cover several city blocks.
What makes this a unique region? San
Diego has more small farms than any other
county in the U.S. (more than 6,500), and
we’re one of the most rigorous counties
when it comes to regulating markets.
Why are the markets successful here? Farmers markets are on the uptick nationwide as
people become more aware of the importance of knowing who produces their food.
And San Diegans are generally more health
and body conscious than most.

How can people support the San Diego
farming community and markets? Commit
to shopping at farmers markets. Get
to know your farmers. Ask restaurant
operators who their suppliers are and
encourage them to keep it local. Join a
community-supported agriculture (CSA)
program as a way to support local farmers. Take advantage of programs like the

Thought Leader forums (berrygoodfood
