Quick-witted writer, on-camera guy, San Diego native and surfer, Troy John-
son is the voice of the San Diego food scene. Look for his words in San Diego
Magazine, where he’s the resident food critic, and catch him on Food Network’s
Guy’s Grocery Games, and as a co-host of Campus Eats on Big10 Network.
Three words to describe San Diego’s food
scene: Healthy, farmy, cross-bordery.
Best part of your job? Discovery. Last week
I tried over 100 dishes at more than 20 restaurants. Discovered deep-fried sunchokes,
my new guilty snack. My mind is always in a
state of being blown through my mouth.
Does San Diego have a new culinary identity? It’s always had the most small farms
of any county in the U.S. Our produce
is Technicolor, ripe, real, and the best
in the country. Now we’re becoming a
super-region with Baja. The Cali-Baja
movement is huge, with Baja’s seafood,
wood-fired cooking, and spices mixed
with San Diego’s elite produce and world-class chefs.
What does the scene in Little Italy reflect
about San Diego? Little Italy is a gold
rush. One of the hottest culinary neighborhoods in America right now. A new
restaurant probably opened as I wrote
Best spots for out-of-towners: C Level,
The Marine Room or Mister A’s for ocean
and skyline views. Cocktails at Craft &
Commerce, Ironside, or Polite Provisions.
Sab-E-Lee for Thai, Las Cuatro Milpas in
Barrio Logan for tacos.
Next foodie neighborhood? Keep an eye
on Barrio Logan and East Village. Progress
always starts in the heart of the city and
slowly creeps into the cool, rough-around-the-edges corners.
