A critically acclaimed, award-winning choreographer whose work has been
presented around the globe, Isaacs is the artistic director of San Diego Dance
Theater and co-founder of San Diego Dance Alliance, Three’s Company and
Dancers, and Isaacs/McCaleb & Dancers. She’s also the originator of Trolley
Dances, a San Diego artistic treasure that’s celebrating its 18th year.
Tell us about Trolley Dances: We partner
with the Metropolitan Transit System
(MTS) every year to bring dance outside
of the theater setting to site-specific locations in and around the stations of the
MTS trolley lines. Every year is a new
adventure, with six world premiere dances
from local and nationally recognized choreographers with nearly 50 dancers chosen
at a public audition. Trained tour guides
lead audiences to see the dancers, who are
split among the six featured locations.
How did you come up with the idea? We
were out of money and couldn’t afford to
rent a theater. Also, I had recently seen a
similar project in Bern, Switzerland.
Describe San Diego dance culture: A
burgeoning modern dance scene.
Any other unique public art or dance in San
Diego? San Diego Opera’s “Opera on Track”
and La Jolla Playhouse’s Wo W Festival.
Future programs? In April 2017, The Art
of Climate Change features our company
dancers in my “Requiem for an Ocean,”
with an original score by Steve Baker and
a melting glaciers installation, Ice Maiden,
by artist Ana Katrina Scheidegger.
What do you love about San Diego? The
inside-outside life we enjoy here. My
heritage is Italian, so I also love growing
my own herbs and veggies.
Favorite places in the city? I like how close
Jake’s Del Mar and The Marine Room are
to the ocean. I’ve been taking my family to
both spots for more than 30 years.
Our award-winning company brings you favorites
that entertain, and daring works that inspire. Take
something unique away from each performance,
whether it’s a classic musical or a bold drama.
Join us for the journey this season.
