MISSION SAN LUIS REY
Oceanside’s Mission San Luis Rey, known
as the “King of the Missions,” is the largest
in California and offers guided tours.
Explore its historic church, museum and
cemetery, the oldest in North County.
OLAF WIEGHORST MUSEUM
Fans of classic Western art shouldn’t miss
this El Cajon treasure, where Wieghorst’s
paintings tell the story of the American West
and era of the cowboy in beautiful detail.
Located on MCAS Miramar, this museum
preserves Marine Corps aviation history.
More than 30 aircraft are on display, as
well as an exhibit honoring women in the
Marines from 1918 to the present.
GEM INSTITUTE OF AMERICA
There are rotating exhibits and eye candy
galore at the GIA headquarters, which
has 1,000 pieces on view and educational
displays on minerals and gems. Call ahead

MUSEUM OF MAKING MUSIC
This museum showcases the evolution and
craftsmanship of musical instruments from
the late 19th century to the present day,
and offers hands-on workshops and live
MARITIME MUSEUM OF SAN DIEGO
Climb aboard historical ships and painstakingly
constructed replicas, ranging from an American
research submarine and the HMS Surprise (star of
Master and Commander and Pirates of the Caribbean:
On Stranger Tides) to the iconic Star of India, an iron
sailing ship built in 1863. Three-hour topsail schooner
excursions depart most Sundays.
SAN DIEGO FIREHOUSE MUSEUM
The former Fire Station No. 6, the city’s oldest, now
displays memorabilia and antique equipment dating
to the late 1800s. Highlights include a horse-drawn
steamer, La Jolla’s first fire engine, and an artifact
from the old World Trade Center.

OF LA JOLLA
