ANZA-BORREGO DESERT STATE PARK
A two-hour drive from the city, this state park is
the largest in California, with 500 miles of dirt
roads, 12 wilderness areas and endless trails.
Hike the Pictograph Trail to see ancient art or
drive out to Fonts Point for San Diego’s spectacular version of the Grand Canyon. In the town of
Borrego Springs (a 1950s Hollywood hideaway),
take a scenic drive through the Galleta Meadows
Sky Art Collection to spot giant outdoor steel
sculptures of prehistoric beasts and dragons
along Borrego Springs Road. Or, play a round
of golf on the Tom Fazio–designed course at
Rams Hill Golf Club.
Experience a slice of rural life at Oma’s Pumpkin
Patch in Lakeside and Bates Nut Farm in Valley
Center during pumpkin season (late September
through October). Both farms offer hay rides and
fun activities for kids.
CALIFORNIA WOLF CENTER
Observe Mexican and Alaskan gray wolves at
the conservation center and learn about their
behaviors and the efforts to return them to their
natural habitats. Reservations required.
OASIS CAMEL DAIRY
Fancy a ride on a one-humped ungulate? Then
head to this 34-acre dairy farm in Ramona. It’s
open to the public on specific tour and festival
days, or you can book for a private group.
MISSION TRAILS REGIONAL PARK
Enjoy hiking in and exploring this beautiful
5,800-acre park, which encompasses Lake
Murray, the Old Mission Dam and the Cowles
Mountain Trail, a popular climb that ascends
nearly 1,600 feet above sea level. Bring the
camera for the sweeping views.
