For over 78 years, El Indio Mexican Restaurant and Catering
has been serving hot, fresh Sonora-style food to San Diegans.
El Indio began as a small tortilla factory in August 1940 at the corner
of India and Grape. After World War II, we moved to our current
location at 3695 India Street in the heart of Middletown.
In the beginning, we made all of our hot, fresh corn tortillas by hand,
making only 30 dozen per day. After building his first tortilla machine in his
basement, Ralph Pesqueira Sr. started making over 300 dozen corn tortillas
per day. Our customers began to ask for more. The “taquito” was born.
Today, our menu of house-made tamales, enchiladas, chile rellenos and
chimichangas are among a few of our most popular dishes. Friendly service,
affordable prices, and delicious recipes have made El Indio a longtime
favorite among locals, visitors, and TV hosts like Guy Fieri, who profiled
El Indio on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.
Customers come from all over to enjoy the world-famous chips,
salsa, and guacamole. Be sure to grab a bag!
