San Diego is rich with scenic parks,
architectural wonders, historic
buildings and a dynamic art scene
In the heart of Barrio Logan, San Diego’s most
storied Mexican American community, is Chicano
Park. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2017 for its importance to the Chicano
civil rights movement and is remarkable for its
epic public murals. Dozens of paintings depict
Aztec mythology, civil rights leader Cesar Chavez,
Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and more.
CABRILLO NATIONAL MONUMENT
Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo
landed at the end of the Point Loma peninsula in
1542, the first European to set foot on the American West Coast. A statue of him stands tall at the
Cabrillo National Monument, a U.S. National
Park. Kids love the tide pools and the Old Point
Loma Lighthouse, San Diego’s first.
MARITIME MUSEUM OF SAN DIEGO
Explore our rich seafaring heritage as you climb
aboard historical ships and incredible replicas, ranging from an American research submarine and the HMS Surprise (star of Master and
Commander and Pirates of the Caribbean: On
Stranger Tides) to the iconic Star of India, an
iron sailing ship built in 1863. Three-hour topsail schooner excursions depart most Sundays.
FLYING LEATHERNECK AVIATION MUSEUM
Located on MCAS Miramar, this museum preserves Marine Corps aviation
history with more than 30 aircraft on display. Past exhibits have highlighted the history of women in the Marines and the Navajo code talkers of
World War II.
THE NEW CHILDREN’S MUSEUM
Kids love the hands-on, fun-filled exhibits that encourage play and foster
creativity at this innovative, modern museum that caters to toddlers, teens
and all ages in between.
Mission San Diego de Alcalá, California’s first, was built in 1769 and named
after Saint Didacus of Alcalá—more commonly remembered as San Diego.
Oceanside’s Mission San Luis Rey, known as the “King of the Missions,” is
the state’s largest. Both offer tours.
OLAF WIEGHORST MUSEUM
Fans of classic Western art should not miss this El Cajon treasure, where
Wieghorst’s paintings tell the story of the Old West in beautiful detail.
SAN DIEGO CHILDREN’S DISCOVERY MUSEUM
This North County learning center aims to inspire kids to explore the
