In San Diego, you can find everyone
from Olympic hopefuls to newcomers out for a spin, so pack your water
bottle! For pure scenery, ride the
Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) from
Del Mar to the Camp Pendleton
Marine Base above Oceanside, or
cruise the smooth, flat paths around
Mission Bay, stopping after a mile
or 20. Want a challenge? The 13-mile
climb to the Mount Palomar Observatory is all hills, all the time.
Riders seeking a challenge should
head inland, to explore the rugged
terrain of San Diego’s East County.
Corral Canyon is a great spot for a
backcountry ride, or cruise the 12-
mile loop through Daley Ranch in
Escondido. For a quick fix, try
Mission Trails Regional Park,
just 8 miles from downtown. This
favorite spot of runners and hikers
also offers a hardy mountain bike
experience with several trails, some
tough, others more easygoing.

At Chula Vista BMX, inside the
U.S. Olympic Training Center (2800
Olympic Parkway, Chula Vista), you
can ride the track with current Olympians, take a lesson, or just watch the
action from the stands. For a more
relaxed pace that’s suited to beginners, go for a spin at the Kearny Moto
Park in Clairemont (3170 Armstrong
Street). The family-friendly track has
super-size tabletops and gap jumps.
