From pup-friendly patios and pooch-
pampering hotels to dog beaches and
plenty of green-grass parks to play in,
San Diego is downright dog friendly.
In Ocean Beach, Ocean Villa Inn (5142
W. Point Loma Blvd.) gets two paws up for
being a Frisbee toss from Dog Beach,
while Kona Kai Resort & Spa (1551 Shelter
Island Drive) on family-friendly Shelter
Island welcomes four-leggers under 25
pounds. In La Jolla, La Valencia Hotel
(1132 Prospect St.) provides dog owners
with a complete list of pet-friendly restaurants and activities at check-in, and pups
are welcome at on-site restaurants.
Estancia La Jolla Hotel and Spa (9700 N. Torrey
Pines Road), a sprawling former ranch, has
plenty of green space for Fido to explore.
Downtown, both the newly remodeled
Hotel Solamar (435 Sixth Ave.) and Hotel
Palomar (1047 Fifth Ave.) welcome all
pets, regardless of weight, breed, or size,
and can assist with pet-sitting and dog-walking for a fee.
Dogs will have a ball at San Diego’s many dog parks and outdoor recreational spaces,
like the Encinitas Community Park (425 Santa Fe Drive), which boasts two acres of
fenced-in grass for romping, and dog runs in Balboa Park such as Morley Field Dog
Park, where dogs can roam off-leash. Several local beaches also cater to four-legged
friends, like North Dog Beach Run in Coronado, Fiesta Island in Mission Bay, Del Mar
Dog Beach and Dog Beach in Ocean Beach. Or, bring the pups along on a stand-up
paddleboard (SUP) tour, offered by The SUP Connection in Liberty Station behind
the Courtyard Marriott hotel (2592 Laning Road).
Canines can run with the
pack at Morley Field Dog Park
and Nate’s Point, which are
both open 24/7. Hotel Solamar
