ABOU T ROB’S FAVORITES, GO
Grew up surfing: At Swami’s Beach in Encinitas.
It’s one of the best waves in San Diego, and draws
all of the best surfers in the area when it’s good.
Favorite breaks: I love surfing in what I refer to as
the bubble around my house. It spans about a mile
in either direction and contains numerous waves:
Swami’s, Cardiff, Seaside, Pipes and more.
Surf shop: Hansen’s. Don Hansen is my neighbor,
and I like to support the locals.
Advice to young surfers: Respect the beaches and
surf because you love it.
When he’s not surfing: Nothing wrong with a
nice stand-up paddle or heading inland to one
of the many beautiful hikes.
Favorite breakfast spot: Sambazon Açaí Café
Favorite bakery: VG Donut & Bakery, for their
Go-to restaurant: Rimel’s in Cardiff for their
Top three music venues: Belly Up Tavern,
Spreckels Theatre and Copley Symphony Hall.
Always takes visitors to: See a good band at the
Belly Up. It’s got a really good vibe. I’ve seen
everyone from B. B. King and Jimmy Cliff to Ben
Harper and Bon Iver.
Passion project: My nonprofit, Rob Machado
Foundation, supports and initiates educational
programs focused on helping children understand
their contribution to a healthy earth.
Iconic surfer, musician and Cardiff-by-the-Sea local Rob Machado travels
the world chasing waves and photographing surf culture, all while serving
as an environmental steward through his foundation.
