OLD TOWN
Take a walk through time at
the site of the first European
settlement in California. The
streets of Old Town are filled
with historic attractions, including a Spanish mission at
Presidio Park, restored Victorian homes at Heritage Park
Row, and the Whaley House
Museum, rumored to be one
of the most haunted sites in
the country. Get a taste of
the Wild West at the shops
and museums of Old Town
State Historic Park, or find
handmade gifts at the vibrant
Bazaar del Mundo. Stop into
one of the many cantinas on
San Diego Avenue or Juan
Street, then end the excursion with a margarita at Cafe
Coyote, where you can watch
tortillas be made by hand.
¡FIESTAS!
Old Town celebrates two major events each year: Cinco
de Mayo, a weekend of live
music, tequila tastings, a lowrider car show and a ballet
folklórico dance competition;
and the Dia de los Muertos
festival, complete with colorful face painting, sugar
skull candy workshops and a
candlelight procession.
MISSION VALLEY
Just minutes away from
downtown is Mission Valley,
your place to eat, shop, golf
and play. Outdoor enthusiasts
can enjoy the San Diego
sunshine on the links of the
Riverwalk Golf Club or on
a hike at Tecolote Canyon
Natural Park. Sports fans
will love SDCCU Stadium,
home to San Diego State
University Aztecs football,
the Holiday Bowl and other
events. Don’t miss Mission
San Diego de Alcalá, the first
of California’s 21 missions.
Mission Valley is where San
Diegans go to shop. Check
out the designer department
stores at Fashion Valley mall,
then top it all off with a pizza
from Crust Kitchen. Look for
chef-driven pop dinners at
Lot 8, like chef Nick Brune’s
SoundBite series, where food
is paired to music.
