An easy 45-minute drive from downtown, bucolic Ramona has more than 30
vineyards. Live opera, wood-fired pizzas and a world-class sculpture garden elevate the wine tasting experience at Salerno. Guests can explore the
110 rustic acres of Milagro Farm Winery on horseback or via hiking trails,
then sip a sauvignon blanc or Super Tuscan in their spacious tasting room.
Kick back on the Tuscan-style patio of countryside Vineyard Grant James
while enjoying a complex red. Syrah fans should head to umbrella-dotted
deck of Edwards Vineyard & Cellars, which overlooks a camel dairy.
This area’s high elevation creates excellent growing conditions for grapes—
not to mention beautiful scenery. Hawk Watch Winery has an impressive
portfolio of full-bodied reds and crisp whites, made with fruit from its own
and neighboring vineyards. Shadow Mountain sits at 3,400 feet and produces
excellent grapes from vines that are over 70 years old. Enjoy their single
varietals and artful blends, then check into one of the quaint guest cottages
for a romantic stay.
Explore San Diego’s blossoming wine culture
Tucked into an unassuming Escondido neighborhood, this historic winery is home to San Diego’s oldest
Littl; Ital;’; Urba;
vine, a 100-year old Muscat of Alexandria, along with antiques like an old delivery truck, a bottling
press and vintage journals. The eponymous forgotten barrel was discovered by the new owners and
dates back to 1932; its contents were still tasty and have been bottled as a tawny port. Guests can
enjoy live music on weekends while they sip that or more recent vintages. FORGOTTENBARREL.COM
