goW hile San Diego may be known for its beautiful beaches, surf breaks, missions, museums, naval history, animal parks, and of course fish tacos, did you know it was also the first place European explorers landed on the American West Coast? The cosmopolitan San Diego we know and love today has roots back to 1769, when Franciscan friars established the first of California’s 21 missions near the settlement now called Old Town. Two and a half centuries later we’ve come a long way, evolving into “America’s Finest City,” with diverse neighborhoods, vibrant culture and booming industries.
In 2019, we’re commemorating
these 250 memorable years. We
hope you’ll join in celebrating San
Diego, where California began.
