TOAST THE COAST
San Diego’s claim to craft beer fame
is its West Coast IPA, and just about
every brewery has its own take. Stone’s
IPAs are known to induce hops-fired
happiness. Sample several variations
at craft beer OG Karl Strauss. Ballast
Point flavors their beloved Sculpin
with various fruits and sometimes
habanero. Head to Pizza Port for the
beer, stay for the pizza. Bagby Beer Co.
in Oceanside is a must-try stop on the
“Hops Highway.” Mission Brewery’s
tour guides give guests an inside look
at how brewmasters work their magic.
While others stick to pale ales and
double IPAs, Acoustic Ale and Resident
Brewing have ventured into the triple
IPA market. Sports fans will love
AleSmith’s San Diego Pale Ale .394, a
tribute to Padres legend Tony Gwynn.
The brewery also has an on-site
museum dedicated to the hall-of-famer.
Local brewers love mixing in unique
tastes. Peanut butter sweetens up the
stout at Belching Beaver. Order it with
ice cream; you won’t regret it. Burning
Beard’s Panic at the Monastery has
bubblegum notes. Second Chance’s hibiscus cherry saison supports breast
cancer awareness. Think pink with
Modern Times’ seasonal Fruitlands:
Rosé Edition (available July–August).
Burgeon’s Moo Moo Farm has notes
of dark chocolate and coffee. Barrio
Logan’s Border X features south-of-the-border flavors like horchata and
jamaica. Wake up with Rip Current’s
imperial porter—it’s made with coffee
from Ironsmith Roasters of Encinitas.
